Approximately 5500 students; more than 380 professional staff members, ten schools located in a rural county on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
Five elementary schools (K-5); two middle schools (6-8); two high schools (9-12); one county-wide career and technology center offering eight programs; special classes for exceptional children located in each school with more restricted programs located geographically throughout the county. The Denton Elementary School houses a special education pre-school as well as other county-wide programs. All schools in the county house a pre-school program.
Instructional programs in all subject areas are offered. A comprehensive academic and vocational program includes classes for students of all ability levels. Teachers are part of a continuous curriculum improvement program, and may participate in a number of staff development and inservice programs.
The Board of Education of Caroline County has a long-standing commitment to maintaining desirable class sizes. With few exceptions, classes are kept below 30 students. A continuing building program has modernized all ten schools. Attractive classrooms and teacher facilities are characteristic of each shcool building in the system. Group Hospitalization and Health Plans are available on a payroll deduction plan, partially paid by the county. Teachers are reimbursed for graduate credits according to specified rates in the negotiated contract.
Caroline County is on Maryland's Eastern Shore. The county seat, Denton, is on Shore Highway (Route 404), 31 miles from the Chesapeake Bay Bridge. From Denton, Washington, D.C. is 70 miles, Baltimore is 62 miles, and the ocean beaches are an hour's drive away. Small communities help promote good home-school relations, and friendly attitudes toward teachers prevail.
